The San Jose Giants even up the series on Wednesday night with a commanding 8-3 victory over the Lake Elsinore Storm shifting momentum their way in the early season showdown. Despite taking an early lead, the Storm were outpaced by the Giants’ solid hitting and unrelenting pressure in the middle innings.
Early Spark for the Storm
Lake Elsinore wasted no time getting on the board. In the top of the 3rd inning, with the game tied 1-1 and one out, Ryan Jackson delivered with a ground ball single to second driving in Colton Vincent and advancing Kasen Wells to second. The Storm jumped ahead 2-0, the bats were alive, and Jimmy Reyes looked solid on the mound through two.
Giants Answer in a Big Way
The Storm looked good early, but the bottom of the 3rd told a different story. After a quick strikeout of Jakob Christian, Walker Martin came through with a sharp liner to center field scoring Carlos Gutierrez and Dakota Jordan. Just like that, the Giants evened the score 2-2 a there was a clear shift in energy at Excite Ballpark.
In the bottom of the 4th, things unraveled for Reyes and the Storm quickly. A soft bunt single by Gutierrez set the table and Dakota Jordan followed with a scorching double down the right field line, bringing in two more runs. Suddenly, the Giants were up 4-2 and in firm control.
The Storm’s Offensive Struggles
Despite their early success, the Storm lineup failed to respond. Strikeouts piled up, especially against Giants starter Charles McDaniel, who showcased excellent command and poise on the mound. He made quick work of the Storm’s top half, striking out Kasen Wells, Ryan Jackson, and Kavares Tears in the first inning, a preview of the control he’d maintain all night.
In total, the Storm struck out 14 times, with key hitters like B.Y. Choi, Kavares Tears, and Colton Vincent unable to make adjustments against the Giants’ pitching staff. The offense went quiet just as the Giants’ bats came alive.
Pitching Breakdown
Jimmy Reyes (Storm):
The 18-year-old righty showed early promise but was eventually hit hard as the game progressed. Reyes was unable to escape the 4th inning cleanly, allowing key hits that turned the tide in San Jose’s favor.
Charles McDaniel (Giants):
The 22-year-old out of Presbyterian kept the Storm off balance all night. He allowed a few early runs but settled in quickly, flashing swing-and-miss stuff and commanding the zone. His efforts were backed by excellent defense and clutch hitting.
A Glimmer of Hope, Then More Giants Runs
The Storm narrowed the gap to 4-3 at one point, but any hopes of a comeback were extinguished when the Giants pulled away with additional runs in the late innings, capitalizing on a fatigued bullpen and a few defensive lapses.
The Storm will look to regroup quickly as they head into Game 3 with a chance to reclaim the series lead. While the early offensive spark was encouraging, consistency and adjustments at the plate will be key if Lake Elsinore hopes to bounce back and regain momentum.
California League Standings Update
As of now, the Lake Elsinore Storm sit at (12-17), placing them third in the Cal South division, 8.0 games behind the dominant Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (20-9), who lead the division. Just ahead of the Storm are the Visalia Rawhide (14-15), riding a hot streak and sitting 6.0 games back. The Inland Empire 66ers (9-20) round out the division, trailing by 11.0 games.
In the Cal North, the Modesto Nuts lead the way with a (19-10) record holding a 2.0 game advantage over the second-place San Jose Giants (17-12), who are now 6-4 in their last 10 and surging after their Game 2 win. Stockton (15-14) remains within striking distance, 4.0 games out, while the Fresno Grizzlies (10-19) are struggling at the bottom, 9.0 games back and just 2-8 in their last ten.
With the season still young, there’s plenty of time for movement and the Storm will need to string wins together soon to climb back into contention.
